I am the Ervin K. Zingler Chair of Economics at Rice University, where I chair the Department of Economics and direct the Center for Economic Mobility at the Kinder Institute for Urban Research.

I work on labor economics, and specifically on how human capital is formed over the life cycle: what parents believe about their children’s development, how they form these beliefs, how those beliefs shape investment, and what early interventions actually change.
